Comprehensive Adult Eye Examination
What to Expect During Your Examination
Comprehensive Adult Eye Examination
Adults should have a dilated eye examination every 1-2 years. This visit includes a vision check, refraction, intraocular pressure check, dilated fundus examination, and other specialized tests appropriate for your condition.
Regular eye exams can help detect problems before they cause permanent damage and are important to help identify vision problems aggravated by workplace demands. Serious eye disease can develop and cause damage before you are even aware that a problem exists.
What to Expect During Your Examination
One of our specially-trained ophthalmic technicians will gather information from you regarding your general medical health, prior surgeries, ocular health, family medical/ocular health, medications, and medication allergies.
The technician will ask if you are experiencing any ocular problems and check your vision (be sure to bring your glasses and/or contact lenses), eye muscle alignment, confrontation visual fields, pupils, and stereo acuity.
Your best-corrected vision will be determined by performing a refraction. The technician will check your eye pressure. Dilating drops will be instilled.
In general, it takes 20 minutes for your eyes to dilate. Your eyes will remain dilated for approximately 4-6 hours. Dilating drops temporarily increase sensitivity to bright lights and diminish near vision.
Dr. Shin reviews the information from the technician’s workup and examines your eyes, including the lids, surface, and inside structures with specialized microscopes.
She will discuss the health of your eyes and her treatment plan for conditions including dry eye syndrome, blepharitis, chalazia, pterygia, glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. She will answer any questions you may have.
If necessary, she will write a prescription for glasses, including recommendations for special lenses, prisms, tint, or coatings.
